"Proudly supporting Westby High School Athletics"
For many years there had been discussion about moving the location of our home football games from Veterans Memorial Field to the current Westby High School track. Roughly ten years ago the track was reconstructed, the interior was crowned, and a drainage system was installed. The vision was that some day this would be the location of the Westby Norsemen football field. This change will not only benefit track and football, but also allow the Veterans Memorial Field to be dedicated as a baseball-only facility.
In February 2016 the Westby School Board unanimously voted to relocate the field before the 2016 football season.
Thanks to the generous contributions by numerous donors and sponsors, Phase I of the new Westby Norsemen Athletic Complex has become a reality. The new press box was constructed with the future in mind, and will serve our media and coaches for generations to come. Due to the very generous donation from Spanky and Michelle Felton of Sleepy Hollow Auto, a new scoreboard was also added to the site. The finishing touches for the first phase came at the September 16 game vs. the Viroqua Blackhawks, when our local veteran’s organizations dedicated the flag and flagpole, which they had donated. There were many compliments from coaches, fans and media who were impressed with the quality of the facility. So again, thank you to our donors, sponsors, volunteers, and labor and material contributors, all of whom were needed to make this venture happen.
As we move forward, we are looking at our goals for Phase II. This includes fundraising for stadium lighting and seating. All games this past season were held in the later afternoon hours to allow for Friday games, but with the needed daylight, lights are next on our list for improvements. Although not a necessity to play football or participate in track and field, lights allow for later games and meets. Our goal is to make that happen as soon as possible. As far as seating goes, the plans for the press box took into account certain dimensions for bleachers. Our plans are for modern, elevated stadium seating.
Our Phase III goals would be to construct a parking lot, expand the track to eight lanes, add visiting seating on the south side of the track, move and update the field events for track, and construct a concession stand with restrooms. Our vision is that this will be a wonderful facility that our Norsemen athletes, students, alumni and our communities will be able to great pride in for generations to come.
